Do you need Planning Permission?
Loft: You do not need Planning Permission for the majority of loft conversions. This is because it generally falls under your 'Permitted Development Rights'. Should you need to extend your attic/loft conversion beyond the current size it already is, for example, over an extension then you will need to get planning permission.
Dormer Loft Conversion
This type of conversion is the most popular among homeowners. This conversion is versatile and can be implemented in different types of houses including terraced homes, semi-detached and detached houses. Dormer loft conversions also allow an easy and seamless fitting of a staircase. Also, dormer loft conversions usually don't require planning permission and have been a preferred choice of conversion for many due to this reason.
Hip to Gable Loft Conversion
This type of conversion is a preferred choice for homeowners with semi-detached or end of terraced housing. Usually, this type of conversion is preferred when a house has 3 separate slanting sides of its roof. The side of the roof is then extended out and made vertical. Hip to Gable loft conversion is also chosen when no other type can be implemented in the loft space available.
Mansard Loft Conversion
This type of conversion involves a lot of work as it is a large-scale conversion. These conversions require planning permission due to the nature of construction and changes to the original building. The additional space created after a mansard style conversion is much more compared to a dormer loft conversion. The mansard has a flat roof with the back sloping inwards at 72 degrees. The windows are aesthetically the most pleasing aspect of the conversion as they are built as small dormers. The parapet walls on the sides of the conversion are made using brickwork to resemble the aspects of the existing building.
Garage: Planning Permission is not required unless you are extending.
Basement: Planning Permission is not required. You may need to seek advice if you need to increase the distance between the floor and ceiling. A Basement will need tanking to ensure it is water and damp proof for which we have the knowledge and experience to do this for you. Please ask us for further information.
